Hello Friends and Supporters.
As we wrap up 2017, I want to thank you for your ongoing support to the students and families in our community, and for putting your trust in me as your representative on the School Board.
Over the course of this year I have learned so much, and met so many people that work hard every day to ensure that our students and our community get what they need and deserve. I have also met so many incredible young people that are not only amazing students, but also strong community leaders.
From passing the Safe Haven Resolution, to allocating funds for new athletic fields, to hiring our incredible new Superintendent, I am proud to have played a role in so much progress this year.
Thank you again for your support and encouragement, and for continuing to provide me with your thoughts and insight. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and I’m looking forward to continuing this positive momentum into 2018.
One year ago today I was sworn in as your School Board Trustee. Last night my colleagues unanimously voted me in as 2nd Vice President of the Board. It’s been an amazing year, starting with the passing of the Safe Haven resolution to protect all our students, to hiring our incredible new Superintendent, to shifting the entire focus of our district to one where we view everything through a lens of equity.
Beyond what you’ve seen at the Board meetings, I’ve been able to use this opportunity to support many organizations and causes that align with our values. Your contributions have been used to sponsor the Sacramento Young Feminists Alliance 2016 Convention, The Sacramento LGBT Community Center Q-Prom, Reading Partners Sacramento, Parent Teacher Home Visit Project and many other organizations that have a direct impact on students in our community. If you are able, I am asking today for a small contribution to our campaign fund, which allows me to continue sponsoring and supporting the great things happening for kids in our community. You can donate at the link below.

One of the most important things a school board does is hire the Superintendent. This position acts as the CEO of the district, ensuring that the community’s vision for our kids is implemented.
We are in the process of recruiting a new Superintendent for SCUSD, and I need your input on what characteristics you would like to see in this person.
We have created several opportunities for you to weigh in on what qualities and characteristics you would like to see in our next Superintendent. Please attend one of the town hall meetings listed below to share your insight.
I’ll be hosting the event at Will C. Wood Middle School next Wednesday, March 8 at 6 pm with Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra.
Thank you to everyone who came to the swearing in celebration last night. It was so exciting to be surrounded by family, friends, and community members that care so much about our kids. I’m looking forward to this opportunity to have an impact on the 43,000 students that attend schools in our district.
Every Monday morning Michael tutors a 2nd grader at Peter Burnett Elementary School through the Reading Partners program. Reading Partners is a nonprofit organization that runs multiple reading centers in Sac City Schools for students who are falling behind. It’s an amazing program and there is a super fun Trivia Night event coming up where you can support them. We’ve got our team all lined up and we are ready to finally use all that useless knowledge we’ve been holding onto. Recruit your team now and see if you can beat us!
Last Sunday, Michael joined members of Sacramento City Teachers Association and others to support Proposition 55, which will maintain our tax funding for public schools. The event included local education leaders, supporters, and a great musical performance by Papa Hip.
This Monday! Come hang out, chat about education, drink some beer from Hoppy Brewing, and see how you can be eco-friendly and refill your soaps and cleaning supplies at Refill Madness without creating more trash! That’s a win all around.
